Most health foods stores and supermarkets have a variety of weight loss supplements, many of which claim to achieve remarkable results. Although it is tempting to stock your kitchen cupboards with bottles and bottles of weight loss 'potions', some have been known to have more reliable results than others. This article looks at four popular weight loss supplements and whether they are worth your bucks.

Green Tea

According to weight loss website, weightloss.com.au, green tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis Bush family and generally speaking some of the highest quality types come from China, Japan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka and India. Many research studies have shown that drinking green tea has a positive effect on weight loss as well as our general health. In addition to this, substances such as theanine are present in the tea which may raise your metabolism and suppresses appetite. Green tea has also shown to increase the body's ability to burn fat (fat oxidation) which has also been attributed partially to the relatively high levels of caffeine in green tea, although the levels are not as high as coffee, for example.

Many researchers believe that in order to obtain the maximum benefits of green tea it is advisable to drink as much as five to ten cups a day. However, because green tea has relatively high levels of caffeine researchers advise that anyone who suffers from conditions such as heart or kidney disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, anxiety disorders, blood clotting problems as well as women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should talk to a doctor before consuming large quantities of the tea. It is also advisable not to give large amounts to children either because of the caffeine content.

Although green tea has numerous benefits, the most popular of uses is its weight loss properties and it is becoming increasingly popular in the western world, with many celebrities now recommending it as a weight loss tool.

Acai Berry

According to the article entitled "Acai: Weight Loss Wonder Fruit?" written by By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD on the WebMD website, the acai berry does contain a large amount of antioxidants which are helpful to general health, but there does not appear to have any 'magical' properties when it comes to weight loss. This is according to David Grotto, RD, author of "101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. " Grotto goes on to say that "There is not any single food, including the super-healthy acai berry that can provide the solution to weight loss. To lose weight, you need to control calories with a healthy lifestyle approach that includes plenty of physical activity, nutritious foods, and adequate rest." According to some websites which market the product, acai's fiber and essential fatty acid content help the body burn fat more efficiently and helps speed up the metabolism process. These claims however remain largely unsubstantiated due to over-the-counter supplements not being as closely regulated as prescription medicines.

Grotto goes on to say that there is something unique about acai, it is one of the few fruits, with the exception of avocados, that contain monounsaturated fats (MUFAS). MUFAS are thought to help you feel fuller for longer but the amount present in acai is so small that it would be work out to be very expensive due to the sheer amount of acai berries you would need to consume for the MUFAS to become viable.

Hoodia

According to an article on the webMD website entitled 'Lots of Hope, Hoodia has been marketed as the 'wonder drug' for weight loss. The plant from the Kalahari Desert is now imported in huge amounts to westerners who need to lose the flab. Mark Blumenthal, Founder and Executive Director of the American Botanical Council, states that the evidence recorded from one study was not conclusive. "We can only say the evidence available to us right now, which is considered inadequate, suggests that there is some type of appetite-suppressing mechanism in some of the naturally occurring chemicals in hoodia," Blumenthal says. He adds that his organization has not received any consumer reports of safety problems with hoodia use. The study was conducted by David Maclean, MD, Professor at Brown University in Providence, MacLean then goes on to say that a cousin of Hoodia's P57 molecule may eventually prove to be a better answer ""A chemical within that class of molecules has real potential to reduce appetite," he says. "I'm less confident regarding the hoodia molecule itself for reasons relating to its metabolism

What is the 5/2 Diet?

The 5/2 Diet is an intermittent fasting diet. Basically, people eat a restricted calorie diet two days a week and eat whatever they want the other five days of the week. Dieters pick the two days of the week they want to fast. During those two days, men can consume 600 calories and women can consume 500 calories. The calories can be broken up into meals, or the person can eat all of the calories at one time. It's important that dieters find the best option for their own needs.

Benefits

First, of course, this diet can help people lose weight. On top of that, the fasting that's included in the diet is believed to lower people's insulin-like growth factor 1 hormone (IGF-1). This hormone helps people grow. After people finish growing, though, the hormone can actually cause them to age faster. By lowering the hormone, it is believed that people can live longer, healthier lives, and look younger in the process. Additionally, lowering the hormone is believed to decrease the chance of getting Alzheimer's and cancer.

Drawbacks

While the 5/2 Diet has lots of benefits, it also has some drawbacks. First, some nutritionists are worried that the diet can cause people to develop eating disorders, since it focuses on binging and restricting calories.

Also, fasting can make it difficult to concentrate, which can cause you to have some problems at work and at home.

Tips for the Diet

You should plan your fasting days ahead of time so you won't have to prepare meals when you're hungry. On top of that, you need to plan your fasting days around important events in your life. For example, if you have a weekend trip planned, you should fast during the week so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Additionally, don't exercise on your fasting days. You won't have the strength you need to exercise vigorously, and you could end up getting injured.

Also, don't put your fasting days back to back. Have at least one regular eating day in between your fasting days so you can get your strength back up. This will make the diet much easier.

Finally, don't be discouraged if the first fasting day is very difficult. You might have a headache and feel weak, but that's normal. Lots of dieters reported that the first fasting day was the most difficult, but the fasting days got progressively easier. Thus, don't back down just because you have a hard day.

The 5/2 Diet definitely has its benefits. It can help people lose weight and get healthier. However, dieters have to be careful so they don't develop an eating disorder.

Obstacles to Weight Loss (Part II)

Okay, you are cruising along... eating right, adding some exercise, journaling your progress - doing all the right things. Days, weeks, and months go along and your momentum slows. Hmmmm, you think. I'm looking pretty good, feeling pretty good; maybe I can be a little softer on myself. I don't have to be so religious about following every rule.

You are totally open to this disastrous scenario if you haven't taken this preventive action. But what could be missing from this picture? You've been doing all the right things!

If you haven't done this one thing, you will eventually start to spiral out of control.

What Did I Miss?

It is imperative that you set clear, concise, achievable goals. If you don't have these goals in front of you throughout each day - visible and encouraging - you leave yourself open to disappointing yourself, becoming discouraged, and maybe even giving up. Don't set yourself up to fail! It may be an obvious fix, but it's often overlooked or generalized.

How to Set Clear, Concise, Achievable Goals

First, let's use weight loss as an example. This is something that's haunted me for the last 15 years. Generally I decide, "Okay, it's time. I'm going to lose weight." Off I go on a diet plan (or health plan) - off to lose weight.

This is too general and vague. If you jump into your weight loss escapade with a general, vague goal, how will you know when you reach your goal? This practice also leaves you with a multitude of outs to grab onto if you need them.

A better goal than a generic lose weight, is to add details and be specific. For example:

I intend to lose 60 pounds by August 2013 by eating the foods on my list (make sure you have your choices in writing) and exercising three times a week. I will only focus on ten pounds at a time.

In the above example, I set a total weight amount to lose. I set an achievable end date. I reminded myself that I have a list of acceptable foods that will help me to achieve my goal. I agreed to exercise, but I did not agree to an hour every day. Agreeing to something that may be unachievable will tempt me to quit when I miss a day or two. By agreeing to only focus on 10 pounds at a time, I break up the larger goal into smaller chunks. I don't have to tackle all 60 pounds at once - something that would immediately become overwhelming.

Amazing Concept

Funny how losing weight empowers you to lose more - and gaining weight leaves you emotionally vulnerable to gain more. When you find yourself succeeding, you feel good about yourself and become excited and driven to continue the actions that led to this success. In fact, each positive thing you do helps you stay strong.

When you plateau or succumb to indulgences, you feel bad about yourself, get discouraged, and think negative thoughts that punish you. Who would feel good when treated so badly? Give yourself a break. Accept that you have not achieved your next small goal, evaluate what you may be doing that might contribute to this delay; make a change to shake yourself out of a boring routine.

What Am I Looking For?

Take an honest look at your actions. You've undoubtedly developed a few habits - healthy or not. Being aware of yourself is the key to resolving your slump.

1. When you evaluate your habits and behaviors, check to see if you've slacked off on the actual plan:

Did you stop measuring or weighing foods?Have you substituted higher calorie foods?Did you reintroduce high-fat condiments?

2. Where have you softened your values? Is there a place you can tighten up on your behaviors for a week?

Look at your exercise routine - is it as strong as it was when you started?Keep a workout calendar and mark every time you work out. A simple X on the date is sufficient. Hold yourself accountable by placing that mark.Skipping a session or two may have led to skipping a week. Recommit to following your plan.

Now take action! You have a plan, you evaluated where it wasn't serving you, and you corrected and altered. You are ready for success!
